According to my computer's dictionary, an AGNOSTIC is "a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God." In any event, for all practical purpose, it is a person who is unable or unwilling to take position on the existence of God, as defined by traditional Theists and Atheists.
I suggest that, with a sincere investment of time and effort, almost everyone can sincerely determine for themselves what they believe is true (and not true) about this fundamentally important topic. I also believe that it is extremely valuable to do so; not only for reasons of personal empowerment, but also for reasons partially explained here and here. Finally, I believe that a sincere exploration of almost any authentic spiritual path will ultimately lead to personal enlightenment, which is an existential understanding.
If you are genuinely interested in becoming enlightened, I can offer three simple suggestions:
1) First, read every page of this web site, including this one. This will give you a "bird's eye" view of the terrain; which will reveal some things to look for and some things to avoid. Notice the details.
2) Choose the first spiritual path that appeals to you and abandon it if/when you feel you have gained all that you can gain from it. The truth is that enough time alone in nature will do the trick too. It may also be helpful to find a personal spiritual teacher; but always be aware of their personal motivations. If it doesn't feel "good"; it isn't "good" (for you anyway). Sometimes, I offer this path.
3) Don't worry about exactly what "enlightenment" means. If you persist, you will have a potentially endless series of profound personal realizations that will inform everything you experience and observe. And, suddenly, the spiritual symbols used in various religions will reveal themselves to you. It is like being able to suddenly see the hidden images in "Magic Eye 3D" pictures. It is awesome!
